What to see in La Alpujarra of Granada

La Alpujarra is a historical region of Andalusia (southern Spain) that encompasses the provinces of Granada and Almería.  It was the last refuge of the Moors in the 16th century: for example the villages closely resemble the Berber villages in the Rif in Morocco

The region consists mainly of a series of beautiful valleys and ravines that descend from the peaks of the Sierra Nevada area (National Park and Natural Park) formed by the basins of the Guadalfeo river in the part of Granada and the Andarax river in the part of Almeria. To the south the Sierra Lujar, the Contraviesa (with its vineyards and almond trees) and the Sierra de Gádor with its ravines, descend to the Mediterranean Sea, ending in the Costa Tropical. It is an area of enormous natural beauty with a mild Mediterranean climate.

The closest village to Casa Limón is picturesque Pampaneira (7 km), one of the ‘Most Beautiful Villages in Spain’, as are nearby Bubión and Capileira.  In these three villages there are many restaurants and shops with products from the region.  Pampaneira, Bubión and Capileira are located in the beautiful and famous Barranco Poqueira: the application for the list of the World Heritage Site has been prepared. Above the Barranco Poqueira you will see the Mulhacén: the highest peak on the Iberian Peninsula.

Trevélez, the highest village in Spain, is famous for its Serrano ham. The village, with its drying rooms and ham museum, is worth a visit too.

Órgiva (11 km), surrounded by olive groves, is the regional center of La Alpujarra.  Every Thursday morning you will find a colorful and extensive market here.

Or how about a long walk to the top of Mulhacén at 3479 m (fortunately a bus takes you from Capileira to 2650 m …), canyoning on the río Verde or horseback riding in the mountains?

At 45 minutes by car you are on the beach: visit the beaches of Salobreña or Almuñecar, the quieter beach of Motril or discover one of the hidden coves, sometimes you can even only get there on foot …

Granada is at one hour’s drive from Casa Limón: a very lively student city full of historic monuments, culminating in the Alhambra (do not forget to reserve on time, see Links), the Moorish quarter the Albaicín, the cathedral … Go ‘tapear’, strolling along the city centre: you get a free tapa when you order a glass.
